GRAHAM, Wash. (AP) --
The long, bizarre case of a Utah woman missing for two years took a horrific turn Sunday when a powerful house explosion killed the woman's husband and his two young sons, moments after the boys arrived for a visit that was supposed to be supervised by a social worker.
Authorities say it appears the husband, Josh Powell, blew the house up on purpose.
The Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to Powell's home, and Powell let his sons inside -- but then blocked the social worker from entering, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.
The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and moments later the home exploded. What's left of the house was still smoking Sunday afternoon, and fire crews were mopping up the scene.
Sgt. Ed Troyer, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman, said emails Powell sent authorities seemed to confirm the Powell planned the deadly blast. Troyer didn't elaborate on the contents of the emails.
Jeffrey Bassett, who represented Powell in the custody case, said he received a three-word email from his client just minutes before Powell and the two boys died. It said, "I'm sorry, goodbye."
The email arrived at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, about 10 minutes before the explosion, but he didn't see it until two hours later, when others told him Josh and the boys had been killed. He said he knew Josh was upset after being ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation recently, but he didn't see this coming.
Powell was under investigation in the disappearance of his 28-year-old wife Susan from their West Valley City, Utah, home in December 2009. He claimed he had taken the boys on a midnight excursion in freezing temperatures when she vanished.
The children, 5 and 7, had been living with Susan Powell's parents since Josh Powell's father Steven was arrested on child porn and voyeurism charges last fall. On Wednesday, a judge had denied an attempt by Josh Powell to regain custody, saying she wouldn't consider returning the two boys to their father until he underwent a psycho-sexual evaluation.
"It's the most horrifying thing you can imagine happening," said lawyer Steve Downing, who represented Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, in the custody fight. "The Coxes are absolutely devastated. They were always very fearful of him doing something like this, and he did it."
Bassett said he represented Powell free of charge because "every parent deserves the right to an attorney." Powell called or emailed him at least once a day, and often more than that, and in their conversations "he never once admitted doing anything regarding Susan. In fact, he denied it."
Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah, which is handling the investigation into Susan Powell's disappearance, said it was too soon to say how Josh Powell's death may impact their probe.
"Quite frankly, this has obviously quickly unfolded up in Washington and we're obviously just working through the details ourselves here," Powell said Sunday.
"We are in contact with authorities," Powell added. "It's obviously an ongoing situation in Washington at this point."
Kirk Graves, 39, of West Jordan, Utah, Josh Powell's brother-in-law, said he and his wife, Jennifer, were stunned by the news. (Jennifer Powell Graves is Josh Powell's sister.)
"It's a shock. A total complete shock," he said. "We never contemplated the idea he would do something like this. You just don't expect it from a father."
Kirk Graves said he and his wife think Josh Powell deliberately set off the explosion to kill him and his sons.
"His world was falling apart around him and he was going to lose his boys and get arrested for Susan's disappearance," he said. "He's a narcissist and he has no love for anyone but himself.

He probably was furious he didn't kill himself and kids when he killed his wife.

NO NO NO! A thousand times NO! I could NEVER kill my child! This MAN is evil! I agree...mental illness and evil personified...just sick! makes me ill!

Anyone else voting "I won't read that."? :surrender:

My answer to the question is pure deep dark anger, spite, & a hatred so strong that it drives any decent or moral fiber out of their souls.

At least the social worker wasn't killed.

If only CPS didn't have to give him visitation. :(

It reminds me of Drew Peterson & other spouse killers, if they killed their kids' moms, why should they be trusted around their children?

I know legally they have rights until convicted, but still, it sucks.

They both probably got an out because it hasn't been proven that they killed their spouse although public opinion says they both did. I sure wish the kids weren't allowed to see him:( Hindsight...

some people are not deserving of the title "mom" or "dad"... This story is heartbreaking. I agree, mental illness does not work for me. This was an evil, selfish man.

Selfishness...if I can't have them nobody can. We had an incident here in our community last summer where a guy that my DH graduated with and had been legally kept from his wife and children due to holding a gun on them and threatening to kill them. It was exactly a year to the day that the first incident happened that he went tot he house where his wife and kids were and killed them and then killed himself. Our whole community was hit hard and I know my DH had a hard time with it and he didn't even know the wife and kids. He knew the guy and had been to his house as a child and had sleepovers...it was crazy.

On the news this morning it was announced that the older boy started talking about the night mom 'left'. Mom was in the trunk of the car and Dad drove them all to the campground. Mom and dad went away for awhile and only dad came back.

The dad is a psycho. I feel so bad for the grandparents. I can't even imagine.

Unspeakable. When I heard something about an update on the Susan Powel case, I never imagined it would be something as horrifying as this. My heart goes out to her family, what a continuing tragedy for them to have to live with for the rest of their lives.

I get court ordered supervision, and I get parental rights, but NOTHING good was going to come from those little boys having regular contact with that man or his creepy father. If the relatives knew the boys had been "talking" lately, the attorneys knew & the court was aware. The fact that the boys were saying mom was in the trunk when they went camping & then she never came back...they should have erred on the side of caution. Maybe even "no contact" wouldn't have been enough to save them, but we'll never know now.

all so very sad and mrs melton has it 100 percent correct.

Here's a story about another family. This just happened a couple of days ago.

DE PERE — Two cars in the driveway, a recycling container next to them and another container near the garage door; there's nothing at the house that offers clues to the tragedy that happened Friday on South Erie Street.

But a short distance away, surrounding the stop sign at the end of the street, are flowers, stuffed animals and messages to the Bay family, victims of an apparent murder-suicide.
De Pere police on Saturday confirmed the identities as Denis Bay, 46, his wife, Michelle, 44, and children Andrea, 14, and Daniel, 10.
Police believe Bay killed his family, then himself, but they don't know why.
Bay apparently was unemployed, and Michelle Bay filed for divorce in October 2010 and moved out of the house for a time, but had returned. The case was pending in Brown County Circuit Court, with a pre-trail hearing scheduled for March 14, according to court records. The divorce is listed as contested.
In a news release Saturday, the department said all appear to have been killed by a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun.
At the stop sign, two women dropped off flowers Saturday afternoon. Neither knew the family, nor did they want to be named. One said she just wished they could have found help, and the other explained that her bouquet included white flowers for the mother, pink flowers for the daughter and blue flowers for the son.
A message left earlier said: "God wrap your arms tightly around Michelle, Andrea, Daniel and Dennis" and quoted John 3:16 from the Bible.
Another said, "You will be missed."
About 11 a.m. Saturday, a De Pere police officer removed a sheet that was hanging over a window on the front of the house at 1245 S. Erie St., the only outward sign that anything unusual had occurred there the day before.
Police said they received a call from Denis Bay at 2:57 p.m. Friday.
Police Chief Derek Beiderwieden said Friday that Bay called police from inside the house to report he had just killed three people and was about to kill himself. A dispatcher heard a shot at 3 p.m., about the time the first officer arrived at the house.
Officers entered the house and found four victims — two adults and two children — shot to death in a bedroom of the single-story home.
Police found 12 spent shell casings and five bullets. One bullet went through an outside wall and was not found.
A cat and dog were turned over to the Humane Society and will be released to relatives.
The news release said the department is building a timeline of events leading up to the shooting and more information may be available this week.

Jesus! What is going on? What is this world coming too?

Josh Powell was a psychopath. I'm glad he killed himself. He probably couldn't live with the fact he killed his wife and was losing his kids meaning he would not have anymore control over them. I'm sickened that he killed the boys. Really? If he killed himself it wouldn't have mattered if the kids told the police what really went on the night he killed Susan.

I feel like my blood is running cold right now.

OMG, my friend lives in DePere....................................wonder if she knew them

THis is all so sad. Why can't we all live in a Utopian society???? (and since there are different interpretation of this meaning, I mean a perfect place where we all just get along...)
