Im really trying to pay attention to what fills my family up....last night we had mashed potatos, corn, green beans, and 3 pieces of sliced ham EVERYONE had to eat something else later

but the other week we had kinda a stir fry with a ziplock full of green peppers, water chestnuts, mushrooms, onions, after it was cooked I put some meat in (chicken for me steak for DH and DSS) everyone ate and was fine and full but both the guys complained that there wasnt enough meat

so Im wondering what do you feed the family that fills and what doesnt

I am not worried about my kids or my DH being "full." I feed them balanced meals in a calorie range for their age/height/weight + activity level. If that's not enough for them, tough titty.

Very few people in the US actually understand what "hungry" feels like.

**** you put a lot of thought into your meals.

So nobody snacks after dinner in your house? My DS12 wants to eat nonstop out of boredom. :surrender:

The kids have to ask for snacks. Always have. My 16yo has endocrine (read: fatty!) genetic issues and stray snacks pack it on him so he has been raised to be careful. Now that he drives I can tell he stops for snax but he is unhappy with the snax=moobies, so he has laid off that again.

I aggressively meal plan. We have literally no extra money, no room for error.

Yeah my son is dealing with moobies. Kids at school have made comments to him about it. I try to gently remind him of that when he is constantly in the kitchen rummaging for snacks, but I don't want to make him too self conscious about it kwim? He always puts on weight in the winter then drops it in the summer.

Just wait...I use to think it was boredom too. Now when my 15 and 16 yr old have friends over they spend a great deal of time in the kitchen cooking (planned, prepared, paid for and cleaned up) by all of them. This happens AFTER supper is served. I think they all have tape worms.....

Very topical as we are cutting back. We have decreased our meat, pasta and mashed potato portions. We have added large salads and more more veggies to replace the smaller portions but still find we are hungry at 7:00. For now we have added rice krispies treats bought from Costco. I know that is not what your looking for but they are small, single wrapped items that provide sweetness and stop us from looking for more when an apple is not going to get the job done.

All this talk about carbs kicked in my carb monster inside me. :(

I hate you atkins. :( I could live on pasta, rice and potatoes alone. F' meat. I wub carbs. But they have made me the fat girl that I am.

I deal out healthy portions, and if my son is still hungry, he is welcome to help himself to fruit & veggies after dinner. He's going through a growth spurt right now, so last night he ate his pasta & salad then ate a bowl of peanuts (that was out of the norm, but I figured was a good thing), 2 bananas, an apple, and a big bell pepper. He said he was still hungry :faint:... but it was bedtime, so I told him he could continue in the morning :giggles:.

meatballs alfredo. stuffs em to the gills. seriously, no sides except gaaahhhhhlic bread. and if that is not on the menu, then we do cheesy scrambled eggs and sausage crumbles. no other sides.

That's interesting to me because shortly after stir-fry we are usually all hungry

Lower in fat, you feel hungry sooner, rice/noodles = carbs and MSG will make you feel full sooner even if you aren't.

We've had this discussion at my house
