When Universal’s The Fast & The Furious stormed in to theatres like a bat out of hell, you just knew that they had a hit on their hands and a sequel (2 Fast 2 Furious) was easily in order. Blazing the city streets in supercharged Japanese cars, catching air and breaking the law at over 150mph was pure adrenaline bliss. And now, a game based on the movie hits the scene by the same company. Enter The Fast & The Furious for your game console.

Before this, Acclaim’s Burnout and Rockstar’s Midnight Club II was the closest feel to F&F as you were going to get. However, those games didn’t feature one thing that the official title does: licensed cars. From Toyota’s to Mazda’s and Honda’s to Mitsubishi’s, nearly all of the cars found in the original movie (as well as a few from the sequel) are found in the game. Anyone up for a little Power Puff Girl S2000 race? Thus far, for any muscle fans, the Charger makes its way in to the game as well. Drool…

In the demo we played we took control of the green Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, much like the one seen in the video trailers for 2 Fast & 2 Furious driven by the movie’s main star, Paul Walker. Adding to the mix of the car roster, Universal says that you will be able to completely get under the hood and customize your car the way you want it. There are a plethora of possibilities to look forward to here, including appearance of the car with custom decals. According to Universal, it will be deep enough for those that know a bit about Japanese cars to get in and tackle all of the manufacturer licenses and know what’s up, but simple enough for the novice to dive in and have a bit of fun.

The Fast & The Furious Game takes place over the course of Los Angeles city much like Midnight Club’s racing scheme; open-coursed city driving. One city does limit things a bit when compared to other games in its class (Midnight Club II) with usually several vast cities.

Gameplay takes pride in its arcade aspects. This is by far no simulation. Control of the cars thus far seemed a bit slow and just didn’t have the sense of “fast” that a game with the title of The Fast & The Furious should have. More or less, the demo presented at E3 was more or less a showcase for a rather nice graphics engine.

Graphically, the game just about holds its own. Car detail is crisp and clean, but the environments could use a bit more work (parts of it almost resemble PSone graphics). When hitting the NOS the game goes into a nice blue zoom, with zippy-like surface textures (think: Star Trek) that blur around the edges of the screen. In all, it looks pretty neat. It’s just too bad that’s the only sense of speed to be found in the game so far.

For a first timer, the game isn’t a total disaster. However, if you’re looking at it solely for its racing aspects it’s got quite a bit of work still needed to be accomplished. Thus far, the car customization seems to be the only intriguing aspect of the game to look forward, however we were unable to really take a good look at this in the demo. When compared to Burnout, Midnight Club 2 and the upcoming Need for Speed: Underground, The Fast & The Furious seems anything but.

this game will be crap. its for a bunch of ricers who think they know about cars...but think a good car is a honda civic with a body kit.

sorry for ranting, but im sick of people who think they know about cars, and know nothing about them.

um....that would be a ricer duh ;) Personally, I can't stand rice rockets (hence why I showed the Charger as the first picture lol). But yea Manex, a Honda is all ready a ricer, then put a body kit and you have a ricer...

so in the sense you just contradicted yourself ;)

lol - i dont think a honda is manufactured as a ricer...its a great car.....does the job, looks somewhat nice, a family car indeed.

but when you see stuff like a del sol with a body kit, lights, and a mach III spoiler, with19" chrome-plated rims, and you open the hood and its all stock....thats a true ricer;)

hmmm they should just stick to the movies, from the screen the gfx look pretty awful

Yes badly. It looks like the driver series on the PSOne!

Hey you cant forget the spoon intake

lol - yeah....cause we all know that with an air filter on a honda civic it is automatically a race car;)
