I will let Finity speak for himself, but I think he is trying to install LINUX to run a CS server for us. I personally don't think that is necessary as I have seen CS servers run on Windows, but for the sake of Finity speaking for himself, is that the case Finity? You want to run a CS server over the internet?

yes i want to run a bloody cs server
i installed linux on my other computer
i try to download file. it only gets 15mb of the file. i try to untar file. it doesnt want to untar file. i try to un gzip the file. it doesnt want to do that either. now i cant even download a file AT ALL cause i messed up the mounting or some crap. i really dont comprehend what linux is at all.
if you can help me run a server in windows FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TELL ME HOW!! i have looked and the only server i have seen is for linux. theres one for windows?

Finity, I'm betting I could probably help you out here provided you supply all CS knowledge. IM me tomorrow (Monday) sometime around/after 5:00 (MST) = 7:00 (EST) and I'll try to walk you through it. Start by downloading the file in windows so at least that won't be an issue.

How big is the file supposed to be? If you don't download the full file, you won't be able to untar or unzip it.
Also, is it a tar or a gz file? You tried untaring it and unzipping it.

its a 74mb tar.gz. i guess you hafta ungzip it before you can untar it eh? well, i moved it from windows to linux after i had the whole file by putting it in the boot dir since that is the only directory that windows can read and i try to move or copy it and it says access denied. what is that about? how do i check how much room i have left on the partion? how can i partion more space?
by the way, i left the server up today its 209.191.82.168:27015 if you wanna check and see what yer ping is or whatnot. lemme know. and this time im sure it works cause i started an internet server, not a lan server

Why would you think you can open a 74MB file if you only downloaded 15MB of it?
And yes, a tar.gz file has to be unzipped to give you the tar file, then untarred to extract the contents.

Finnie, I recommend you order <u>UNIX: In a Nutshell</u>. This gives you all of the commands, shells, and how to's on basic programs like vi. I ordered it since I am not a big UNIX guru, and it helps, immensely.

Also, Linux In A Nutshell is good, and concentrates a little more on some of the Linux distros out there.

Unix Unleashed . Both are excellent Unix/Linux references.
Also, you'll want to find a site that has copies of all of the HOWTOs and print the out so you have them in front of you.

A couple of other things that can help.
man <command name>
That gives you a manual on the command. A good thing to do is to have one console in vi and another console with man on vi up for you to reference.
which <command name>
That tells you if the command exists or not. If it exists, it tells you the shell it's in.

takes too long to boot and whatnot and i just cant use it for the life of me. thanks anyways, good to know i have all you gurus here whenever anything goes wrong or i need help

Fin> You must've configured something wrong, because every Linux box I've set up boots faster than any 98/NT/2000 box I've ever used.
The only time I've seen it take longer is when an improper shutdown occurs and fsck has to run on an absurdly large drive.

remember that i installed linux4windows, which runs as a subdir under windows or something....so it takes FOREVER...im not using linux anymore
too frustrating
now i gotta figure out howto get rid of it

Never tried that....but my impression with wrappers is EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW (done in the Ernest Goes to Camp fashion)
Stay FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR from any kind of wrapper or emulator if there is a better way. Adding layers slows your system down.
