Apple picking - go early - orchards are low

Where is this? Is it local to us? I am thinking about going to Marion or Iowa City to the orchards there...

NM I researched and it is in WI.

Have you tried Stone's Apple Barn across the River in Hampton...that's where our kids always went on field trips...

Did you go to jonamac? How was it? We almost went today but am trying to wait until a little bit later. Love the doughnuts there.

Yep. Don't wait too long, they are only picking a couple days a week and the trees are pretty bare. No where near the number of apples last year.

On the other hand the pick your own pumpkins are 2/$10 and they are huge.

We probably spent 4-5 hours there between the jumping pit/petting zoo/activity area/apple picking/pumpkin picking/hay ride/train ride.

Didn't even bother with the maze.

Oh, and Dekalb Schnucks is less than 10 minutes down the road. Got $50 worth of groceries for $10.10.

2:40 from me. Wow you guys are out there.

Apple Holler is about 20 min across the WI border on 94. Seriously crowded and i'm never sure why when there are so many others to chose from.

Gravert's is where we normally go. I was very sad that they are not having u-pick. Will check out Stone's, THANK YOU!!

I am trying to find an apple orchard to visit this Friday. We are in northern IL, near the WI border. Anyone have a suggestion?

Thank you so much!

If anyone is on the South side it's worth a drive to Garwood Orchard in LaPorte, IN. I couldn't believe how full all the trees were (this was a week and 1/2 ago). Like there was no drought. Prices were higher than normal at 1.25/lb but still better or equal to grocery store and really they tasted so good. This prob makes me sound crazy but ya, we bought 80 lbs. We store in the basement and they last months.

Weird part is we had been to DS 8 field trip at County Line Orchard just a few days before in Crown Point (about 20 minutes away).....they had gutters tied to the trees with apples bought somewhere in like Iowa, so you could still get the picking "experience" :snort: The trees were bare.

I am going to http://www.royaloakfarmorchard.com/ on Friday.

Editing. I put in the wrong place.

May also try http://www.myharvesttime.com/

How were the apples at Royal Oak? We are thinking of going there too, but can't make it until Columbus Day. Since that is another 10 days away, I'm worried they won't have any apples left by then. We usually pick a decent amount and then make our own applesauce, dried apple chips, a bunch of baked goods, etc., but I'm worried we just won't get enough apples.

Anyone know how plentiful the apples are at Kuipers Farm? I want to go apple picking either Sunday, 10/7 or Monday, 10/8 (Columbus Day) ... Royal Oak is open 10/8 but according to their website, they are running out of apples fast? Wondering if I should go a day earlier and go to Kuipers instead?

Kuipers last day of u-pick was yesterday.

They still put apples in huge crates out in the orchard and you can still take the tractor with out and fill your bags from the crates. But no more fruit on trees to pick. Check their facebook page for more info (kuipers family farm)

If you are there Sunday before 1 pm stop by for a donut and say "hi"
I work in their bakery on the weekends.

I've picked in the past at County Line Road Orchards. If you Can like I do, it gets very expensive. Otherwise, taking the kids there is fun. I opted not to go this year, I read about the " Raining Apples" on the Country Line Website, and figured, I dont want to pay overinflated prices, to pick apples out of a gutter.
This year, my Mom bought apples from SWMichigan. I belive they were $17.00 for a half bushel of Jonathan Golds. They were beautiful for canning Apple Pie Filling. Looking forward to making pies this winter.:girl:

last weekend while in Dubuque i was talking to my son about getting apples ( he had gone to a few different orchards last Fall up there)
he said oh we can go to the XXXX one--they have a huge table outside full of apples with a scale and an honor system box .60 cents a pound, you can go 24 hours and get them!

sadly we never made it out there, but i really want apples still...
