Women who birth at home aren't generally lying on their backs in bed...

The lay midwives I've known have taken on any clean-up as a normal part of their job. They do everything possible to make it easy for the mom and new baby to bond and enjoy each other for the first couple of days, at least.
 
Well I guess we are veering off Circumcision quite a bit here.... MrsMelton you opened a can of worms! ;)

A lot of interesting assumptions here about how and what happens in a non-hospital setting. It's not what you imagine in many instances. My birth began in a non-hospital birth center run by a team of 4 midwives. Complicated pregnancies were transferred out to specialists as issues arose and those of us who were healthy could remain with the midwives. (I ended up being one of the 10 percent who need to transition out to the hospital during labor.)

I had many fun conversations that began, "Which hospital are you planning to deliver in?" and often ended with shocked silence as I said, "Well... actually we aren't having our baby in a hospital..."

I'd say Mrs Melton and I are both aware that this is not a popular choice and this is fine. I just defend the right to make my own choice about how and where I give birth. I think each of you has that right as well. I applaud choice in medical decisions as all approaches come with pros and cons.

I also agree that you have to research and carefully choose providers if you are seeking a non hospital birth just as you should for a hospital or an OB. There are horror stories in both settings. I am thrilled with the choices we made for our first birth and would pursue similar options or homebirth should we be expecting again.

I don't think having a birth plan makes anyone a control freak in a bad way. I mean, it is my body and my baby, and I think I have the right to make sure that my wishes are honored so I have the birthing experience I want. It's not a time when I want to surrender that much control over to someone who may or may not have my best interests in mind. There are a lot of aspects to the birthing process that could potentially have long-term health consequences for me and/or my baby. I want to be informed about my options so I can make the best decisions for us. As others said, hospitals and doctors are often concerned more about what's easiest for them, what's routine, and what's most convenient, not necessarily what's in your best interest. I don't want to have to make a decision in the heat of the moment, when I should be focused on just having a baby. And, having it written down helps decrease the chance of miscommunication, and it will hopefully help cut down on the number of times you have to repeat things to different people.
 
With Lex my first choice was a birth anywhere but in a hospital.

My second choice was a well thought out birth plan.

My third and final choice was "hmm die or just go with what the doctors want?" I went with what the doctors wanted. All I cared was that my friends took pictures (so I could see what went on outside of the surgical suite) and that he was hooked up to my boob as soon as possible. I got both of those things. Of course I have a friend who used to be a L&D nurse and we'd talk as my pregnancy progressed. She had to work hard to convince me that my first and second plans were rapidly going out the window.

I just stumbled upon this thread tonight. Obviously, I'm about 3 weeks late to the party. I have not read beyond your post, and do not intend to do so.

Here's my say ...

As a male who was unable to decide for himself, due to my young age of 0+:

I AM TOTALLY, 100% AGAINST THE COMPLETELY USELESS ACT OF MUTILATION KNOWN AS CIRCUMCISION.

If I could go back and slap my parents around a bit right after I was born, I would have never allowed such a ****ass thing to be perpetrated against me.

With all due respect to anybody who holds an opposing viewpoint, there will never be a worthy argument in favor of this barbaric act.

My normal format is to hang out in "New Posts", and this was one of the threads that was in the list last night.

I stumbled ... because I was trailing my cursor over the topics, and kinda glazed by this one, and was like, "whoa, wth", and then just had to come back to it to check it out.

I didn't read the thread, but today this topic was in my "New Posts" list, so I clicked on your reply.
