How can people afford to do this?

I also think there is a night and day difference between Schaumburg and Oak Brook Wildfire. Especially with the customers. We are closer to Oak Brook but eat at Schaumburg because our baby sitter ( my parents) lives across the street. We prefer Oak Brook.

I have a friend who is a server at Oak Brook and will pick up shifts at Schaumburg. She makes a lot less $$$ at the Schaumburg location. She said some of the Oak Brook servers won't work there because the money is so much less.

As for the location, the area is definitely not the same as say 10 years ago. Our family and fiends are dying to get out but can't because of the hit they will take when they sell their house. You should see what my parents paid for their house and how much the house next door sold for. On saturday DH saw the new neighbors and joked about how bad the neighborhood has gotten. He was not joking. They pay crazy taxes for what? My parents are really sad about how their retirement home and the area they raised their kids has turned out. My Mom wants to take the hit and get out ASAP. My Dad doesn't want to lose $$$. So everyday he will have to continue to listen to Mom complain. That cracks me up :)

We've eaten at both locations. We eat here in Schaumburg when it's just us but DH works in Oakbrook and we tend to eat there with extended family if we are celebrating birthdays or other family locations because the sales tax is cheaper there than here and when you get a big group together, the bill is often a few hundred dollars so the tax savings is worth it. The level of service is about the same at both locations but I actually think the food tastes better in Schaumburg.

I'm not sure what to make of your post though. I've lived in Schaumburg since 1992 and while some areas have changed and aren't as nice, your post makes it sound like all of Schaumburg is basically riff raff or something ...

I just find it interesting that they rattle off all these dire unemployment numbers every single day but nice restaurants like this are packed on a Wednesday night.

I think it was already mentioned, but this is where people are now splurging. They are cutting back on other things to spend time together. Financial choices are so relative...Some people with no kids will buy a large house in a neighborhood with poor schools and built it to meet their needs, some people must have a HD TV, some are driving there 1997 beat up car to eat out good. Sacrafice is relative to what is important to you. Some might think they would rather party young and save later and think you wasted your young years, some think they want to save and not worry when they are older and some think they have no idea when they are going to die so live it up now.

I think that without seeing the whole picture of any of the people in these packed restaurants it is hard to make any judgement.

I've been in Schaumburg for 12 years and love it, if I won the lotto I won't move I would just tear down the house I have and build a new one. Schaumburg also has great schools my children are getting a wonderful education.

Never said riff raff....just not a place we chose to live. I moved there in 1975?? Attended private school for most of my education. Both DH and I knew we didn't want to live there.

I feel the same way about where I live. Haven't tried the schools yet, my boys aren't old enough.

No, you never said riff raff. I just said that your post made it sound like some of the people living here may have been. You did also mention that your DH said "how bad the neighborhood has gotten" which makes it sound like bad people have moved in or something.

May I ask why "you knew you wouldn't want to live here?" Too much crime, high taxes, too many residents, too commercialized with the mall? I don't think we will be here forever but then again, I haven't seen anything yet that makes me think I need to move out of the area in the near future.

Not looking to debate or defend my reasons. You feel one way. I feel another way. To each is own.

I'm happy for the most part too. Our property taxes are too high and there are things about my house (neighborhood) that I don't like but we didn't buy when the market was at it's peak and pretty soon, we'll own it free and clear and will have still made money on it. My DS goes to a good school that tested very high in the state of IL and while I have to fork out money to pay for his school bus, there are worse things I could pay for.

No situation in life will ever be perfect. No town will be perfect, no house will be perfect, just make do.

And if I did move, I don't even know where I'd move to. I have yet to find a town in this area that is perfect.

can you say....Addiction?!?

SIL's niece is a prime example of the way some people live nowadays. Husband works and has retirement $. He brings in about $5000 a month. She doesn't work. They have 1 child that is 12 y.o.

She spends like it is poison in the bank account and she needs to get rid of it as fast as she can.

They "bought" a house in 1993 for $107k. Since then they have not just a second mortgage, but a THIRD mortgage on it. They currently owe about $175k on it AFTER living there for 18 years.

She bought a horse, a little stable for him in the backyard after years of paying stable money. A tanning bed. A new car every 2 years. A new truck for him about every 3 years. Nails done. Hair done. Feet done. (times 2 because the DD has to now get it done everytime too). NEVER cooks. Eats out for lunch after the kid comes home from school and then goes back out to eat for dinner when the DH comes home. Always asks for $ from everyone because of "The baby". Baby? 12 y.o. is a baby????

Last week she hit up her parents who are in their 70s for $1500 for "the baby." Her step father can't stand her and asked to see all her bills. She currently owes her parents TENS of THOUSANDS. Her stepfather saw her bills and without doing anything their bills come to more than what they take in. He told her to get a job. "But I need to be there when the baby comes off the bus." He told her to get a job around it or work nightshift when her DH is there. Then he flipped about the new car. She said "I need something safe to drive the baby around in dad!" He goes balistic and says "BABY??? She is 12 y.o. and bigger than all of us!!!!!" The "Baby" is 5'10" because the father is 6'5" and she really is bigger than all of them.

Anyhooo...I only know about this because my SIL was in the car when they called her niece and her niece hit speakerphone. This was of course after asking my SIL for more $. They get off the phone and she turns to my SIL and says "Do you believe the **** I have to put up with to borrow some money???" My SIL told her "Get a job and you don't have to deal with it." Of course she started talking about how the "baby" needs her and all this other BS.

I think a lot of people are taking $ from old people. Seriously.

I'm sorry if you feel I was trying to start some kind of debate. I'm really not. I really am just curious as to what turned you off this area. I am also raising a family here and if there is something "bad" about the area that I don't know about, I'd honestly like to be informed about it.

I have friends that live in Naperville, Glenview, Kildeer ... they're always trying to get me to move to "their" town. I always keep my options open so that was all there was to it.

No worries.

This is my magic secret to being able to eat out(often):

I charge ALL my business purchases to a credit card. Rack up tons of points and cash them in for gift cards.

Result=FREE restaurant meals!!! :cartwheel:

PS The card IS paid off in FULL each month!

I live in DesPlaines.... Anyone wanna move here :bee:

Or Kenosha? I had to walk past homeless peeps hangin' out outside of the Salvation Army today. Then when I left, got in the car and was at the light, some dude walking up to cars holding a sign up to their windows (I assume he's homeless too). Well Sadie was in the car and didn't let him get too close. :snicker:
