saw this on the kens5 news broadcast this morning.. lemme fill you in. castroville is a small town with a population of about 1500. the most they have ever had for murders in 15 years are intoxicated manslaughter and 2 or 3 bar fights gone bad, and even those deaths were accidental (for the most part).

yeah, some disgruntled boyfriend got dumped, killed his 22y/o gf, 40something y/o gf's mom, 7y/o gf's brother, and himself (27y/o). the step father of the gf is listed in critical condition, and probably wont make it, and the gf's sister is listed in stable condition.

3 bashes here.

1) i hate it when the local news stations. no **** that. the national news takes a look at a tragedy and says "ooo got to get to this first, this screams "promotion at the work place.. or raise in pay!" for the love of god, start acting like its a tragedy instead of a pay raise. reporters are all over it like white on rice; its rediculous.

2) the american public loves a tragedy. are we so insecure with our lives that we recieve pleasure in knowing other people's follies? are we so numb to violence, that when a guy kills 4 and injures two, the news casters say.. im sure people at home are wondering, did the boyfriend break in or was he let in naturally.. thanks bob! W.T.F. and i am totally guilty of this too. i hear about a guy who gets the **** beat out of him by chips, and hear about how he got his naughty bits ripped off.. and his eye is gone; i cant help but lmfao. those chimps showed him! like i said.. totally guilty. i hate it though how we take pleasure in other people's misfortune.

3) this relates back to me being guilty. if you are going to go in and kill 5 people and yourself with a pump action shotgun, cant you at least finish the job? i mean, come on.. they were probably sleeping or lounging around anyway.

yeah, i know: im going to burn in hell. :eusa_wall

Hey esadatari, can we really EVER run out of things to Bash about the media? :eusa_ange Sensationalism, at its best! :eusa_danc

HA! I know what you mean. For some sick reason it's just so entertaining to see a tragedy. And the closer the tragedy is to you, the more entertaining it is. See an explosion in Spain, who cares? See a man take a woman and her daughter hostage and get in a high speed car chase, ending up one town over from me before cops get him... SWEET! The only thing that could've made that better is if he ran onto my campus and was tackled and cuffed right in front of the student center. I'd get a lawn chair and some popcorn for that.

if the media wasn't covering senstaionalistic stuff, then what would there be left to cover? i haven't heard anything about this story, but how are they covering it that isn't treating it like a tragedy? and what is wrong with reporters wanting to get out the site of a news story quickly? would it do any good for them to get there a week after it happened?

all im saying is that the press wouldnt survive if it covered an equal amount of good things along with the bad things. they dont do a report on how a local boyscout troop helped out the homeless by holding a can drive, a dinner, and repairing one of the homeless shelters. they dont usually show any stories about how a school got recognized as an award winning school. i would venture to guess about 90% of the stories are usually bad news.

media explains how brad and jen are breaking up, and how divorce rates in the us are at a woping 52%.

med reports say this drug and that drug need to be recalled because the FDA has ruled them to be unsafe. it turns out that drinking milk can be detrimental to your health if you are a middle aged man because it can prime you up for parkensons (check it out, its kinda interesting). they dont tell you that there have been major strives in the cure for cancer, or kemotherapy. even good news will have its bad sides. good news! they found this new way to map your heart and take a real time 3d render of it! bad news is the american public cant afford even a fraction of the cost! SORRY GUYS ROFFLE COPTOR!

local news. rotty attacks a little kid, house burns down, girl found raped and killed, guy kills his whole family, cops found guilty of bribery.

our world isnt always as bad as the news puts it out to be, its just that bad news sells because it makes us feel better about ourselves.

but everyone love a tradegy...i mean (i know its a little off topic) thats why people watch soaps. you can practically guarantee that however bad you're feeling there will always be someone feeling worse or who is in a worse situation in a soap an di think its similar in the news. thats why i rarely watch it because its so depressing (and thre are some more interesting programmes on other channels anyway

has any news station even tried to broadcast all happy news? i'd like to see one focus on happier events throught the world, or locally or whatever, and see if it actually does suffer in the ratings. i'm not sure that people "like" to see tragedies because it lifts their spirits by seeing others worse off than themselves. i think that such things are newsworthy because it is something horrible that happened and people should be made aware.

You might have a point there Rascal, I mean - think of how popular those Oprah shows are with the "real life miracles" and "dream come true" themes. :eusa_thin

Rascal--I always wished there'd be a certain amount of time duirng the broadcast dedicated to "good news" in the city/community. Just something uplifting unlike the rest of the news

We as humans thrive on sensationalism. It's our nature to rather hear a juicy bit of gossip defaming another (particularly someone WE KNOW!) than something good - "I saw Mary Jane stop to pick up an injured bird by the side of the road". WHO CARES? We're not going to listen to that - in fact our answer would probably be, "short on groceries again, huh?"

Last week while in the Bahamas the only "news" we would watch was the Weather Channel to see what was happening at home weather-wise. It was great!

The News is the News is the News - no one can change it. My belief is that one bad story propegates another - our lives are so stressful, frantic and over burdoned and we find ourselves focusing on the freakin' news and how someone across the country blew away his boss and his family for being fired. Next thing you know, Charlie is at the ammo shop with ill intent on his mind.
