(It's not long, have a read first.)

Well...umm... I don't know what to think anymore.

But then, I guess people are looking at the issue from the wrong angle. It's not so much about the game weapon as it is the real money worth it was sold for. But still... I'm sure some people would have done something similar if not the same even if real money was not involved... scary...

Oh no! Does this mean that someone wants to stab Damm for clearing their virus?? It COULD be termed 'property' after all...

holy taking games too seriously batman. i don't understand why people pay real money for virtual stuff. i mean, in the games there is some form of money and an "economy" of sorts. why does it have to get taken into the real world? this is a poor reflection on the whole gaming community...

oh, and who edited that article? the one guy Qiu turned into Qui half way thru, then back to Qiu.

Rascal, I guess people still have problems with Chinese names.. Understandable enough, we get little exposure to.

The article SHOULD have been edited better, though... ah well...

Anyway, if they were using standard Chinese Pinyin to tranlate the names, it should be Qiu (Chee-oh). Qui doesn't exists as far as Pinyin goes... maybe the editor thought the guy was French and thought: "Oh! Qui??" :p

Anyway, yeah. I find it odd that someone would pay 1000$ for a virtual sword in a game that will turn obsolete in a year or so...

the same thing was happening here in north america too tho'. with everquest and other mmorpg's, people were selling all sorts of things on e-bay. they were selling in-game items, accounts, characters, everything. if you had a high level character and wanted to quit, you could sell your character. e-bay banned it i believe, and now it's in the EULA's of mmorpg's that it is illegal to sell virtual items for real life money (i'm pretty sure). i still question why anyone is willing to shell out real money for virtual stuff...

Heres the deal. US law has deamed that anything that is in one of these games, be it a sword a stick or a set of bracers of oger power, the object is entirely within the programming of the game and is therefore the intellectual property of the game producer and is no way owned by the player. Thusly many game companies, notably blizzard and thier world of warcraft game, have been actively prosecuting people who sell thier intilectual property. NO MORE SELLING STUFF FOR CASH!!! Its illeagal now! That stuff aint yours!

dont argue with this guy said:
yeah...im sure most of you have heard of people killing themselves because they died in their game (everquest)....pretty sad..

...man. That's harsh.

I know it's a sad day one of your favorite character(s) die in any game (or even movie or tv show), but killing yourself for it...:eusa_eh:

But who knows how those people think. Maybe that game and character was everything to them so they couldn't take losing that...but still... unlike relationships, there will always be other games.

i hate to say it, but that is really sad. sad in that someone would kill themselves and sad in that it would be over something so trivial. i mean, i like games but i can't fathom the kinds of emotional investment it would take to put into a game to warrant killing yourself over. most games piss me off too much for me to invest any emotion but anger and annoyance in them :). it's unfathomable to me how someone would kill themselves over a game...

maybe they just felt the character was an extention of themselves and put lots and lots of work into it....but i really dont see how you could get like that...

i think some people just need to get out there and contribute to society a little to get a sense of accomplishment in the REAL WORLD...may be then video games wouldn't seem so important anymore

and people wonder why I don't buy game systems for my kids. They can play them at someone elses house. That way I don't have to worry about them playing it too much, they are at home more than other people's houses, so I figure that a good way to control it.

I'm still not inclined into blaming the game itself for it though, more the individual's personal sense of ownership over his 'property'. Some people get pretty attached to things, and would probably kill someone if rage if they lost it because of them. Electronic property is simply easier to lose than a family heirloom...

No, I'm not saying anyone and everyone would, but there are people out there who have a very real and serious problem with controlling their anger; regardless of their lifestyles (and games they play).

I agree.
Oh and purchasing inventory/items/money for online games is concidered illegal in all mainstream Online games. Square-enix banned something like 800 accounts on afternoon not to long ago(within the last 6 months) most of these accounts were dubbed Gil-sellers. High level characters that would farm items of conciderable value and then sell them in game for gil(currency) and then sell gil over the net for anywheres of $35-$500 usd. This type of play critically ruins in game economies and thus ruins the game play experience for new players who have to work 3 or 4 times as hard for the same items.
As for the people killing themselvs in EQ..I could believe it I knew some people that got so far into FFxi that they lost all sense of the Real World and would spend almost 20 hours a day in game. One of which ended up in the hospital for extreme fatigue.

wow...that's amazing that you acutally know someone that plays games that much. you should have had an intervention :). seriously though, i hope your friend is ok and has toned down their playing a little bit.

i know i play video games more than i should (curse you world of warcraft!) but i take my food breaks and potty breaks and sleeping breaks and real world breaks lol. i'd never ever consider paying real world money for anything in a game...i don't understand the mindset of the people that do this.
