What's new

What veggies are always on your shopping list?

And purple cabbage too...i buy the shreds in the bag. Yummy! I also like tomatoes, spinach, green beans. I just cooked with a shallot yesterday, I liked it a lot. I never ate a veggie until I was 20...now I love them.

Potatoes
baby carrots
frozen cauliflower
onions

Usually, in the summer I buy up lots of corn on the cob, onions, celery, green beans, etc etc and blanch and freeze them...I blanch enough to (hopefully!) last all winter.

Pat was thrilled to have peaches 'n cream sweet corn days after getting out of prison.

Lee, you like bitter melon? I have yet to reach the point where my taste buds think that stuff is good. My aunt used to grow those in California, and there would be tons of them, and my mom would cook them with the pork meatballs every day...I could never understand why she loved them!

YES, WE DO. It's an acquired taste though. My husband loves the stuffed bitter melon with minced meat + shrimps, so I make that whenever I could find the bitter melon.

I put bitter melon in curry, also sliced them real thin, squeeze with some salt and rinse off to get rid of the bitter taste, then either stir fry or put them in soup. You can hardly taste the bitterness! Bitter melon is especially good in the summer, it has the "quenching" or "cooling" effect. Some people also believe raw bitter melon juice is good for diabetic.

I LOVE veggies but, no one else eats them except for me! They do NOT see veggies as a snack, they see them as something they should eat for dinner and ONLY dinner...so lots of beans,(canned or frozen), corn(again canned or frozen, cauliflower, of course the same-frozen and peas for DH and I buy canned mushrooms for omelettes etc... I LOVE a fresh salad but no one else will eat it so it often goes bad, I've quit buying the stuff lately. Wish I had more adventurous eaters.

You guys may remember my/our crazy free spinach phase.... well, we were LOVING it sauted/wilted as our veggie or tossed into a stir fry dish, which I make a LOT of.

Well, when the bags of Caesar and Italian Salad and Hearts of Romaine were free a couple of weeks ago, I got a bunch and have been adding those to my stir fry dishes instead. Definitely NOT the same as spinach, but a good filler and good for us too :bliss:

Fresh:
Lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, baby carrots, potatoes, spinach, green & red peppers, celery, mushrooms- whatever's on sale

Corn on the cob in summer

A variety of frozen veggies

Never use canned veggies.

I always have to have carrots, onions, (organic) celery, garlic, hearts of romaine (I chop my own salads) frozen green beans, frozen broccoli, frozen mixed veggies and dried beans/peas/lentils in the house. Other than that it varies depending what is in season and/or on sale.

Plus I need to have an almost constant supply of sprouts, mung and alfalfa/radish/broccoli. Grow these myself.

ennui!! I grow my own sprouts too:dance:Where do you source your seeds? I'm near the end of a huge order of broccoli sprout seeds and I'm getting ready to place another order. I was thinking about putting in an order for broccoli, fenugreek and radish seeds from Johnny's Seeds -- I've never tried growing the latter two. Any leads on where to get good seeds for sprouting?

I'm a major tomato snob too. No store bought tomato ever tastes as good as garden grown.

me too. I don't really care for fresh tomatoes unless they're home grown. blech on store-bought tomatoes... no flavor :pout:

I have a Spaghetti Squash sitting on the counter near the stove. First timer. Going to follow the directions on the sticker tomorrow!

68 cents per pound at Walmart. Paid $2.39 for it. Haven't priced it elsewhere.

:dance:Glad I'm not the only sprouter!

I'm going to need more broccoli seed soon, too. Where did you get yours?

I go through tons of alfalfa seed & sprouts. Found a place on ebay for sprouting seed for alfalfa, direct from the farm. The germination rate is terrific, comes in a ziplock bag. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ALFALFA-SEED-SPROUTS-SPROUTING-TWO-POUNDS-/110808995233

I got a red rose/daikon mix from The Sprout House via amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Sprout-House-Organic-Sprouting-Radish/dp/B0053U503Y

Again, a very high germination rate & comes in a handy plastic jar. Radish seeds are very easy, very fast, & have a nice bite as well. Free thanks to swagbucks Amazon GCs.

I also bought a 'Broccoli & friends' mix that is mostly clover, alfalfa & radish with little broccoli seed. The germination rate is not as high as my other sprouting seed. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001W2W62
it came in a ziplock bag.

I am looking to grow either pure broccoli or a broccoli/cabbage mix.

I sprout in large canning jars, the 2 quart size, with plastic canning ring and stainless steel screen mesh insert covers. For tiny seeds, I start with a fiberglass screen mesh layer first. I bought the large size stainless mesh inserts from this guy on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-Steel-3-pc-Straining-Sprouting-Lid-Screen-SET-/270627762063

The large canning jars are cheap if you buy them as a six pack at Ace hardware.

The largest sprouting seed suppliers online seem to be:
http://sproutpeople.org/
http://www.sprouthouse.com/

For mung seed, they are much cheaper at the Asian markets. I usually pick up several 12oz bags of seed for about $1.25 each.

For anyone who likes sprouts, you can't get it any fresher than sprouting your own. It's so easy to do, just rinse them 3 times a day.

I have only tried sprouting mung, black and soy beans, all bought from Asian grocery stores. Hmmmmm, I may try other variety!

oh AWESOME thanks for the info! :foryou: I'm going to look into those sellers on Amazon because I have Amazon $$ to burn! Better than paying real $$ for seeds.

I've always bought my seeds from Johnny's. They're in Winslow Maine and I first started using them for heirloom tomato seeds. I don't know why but I've never even thought to shop elsewhere for sprout seeds :dunce: Their seeds for sprouting are cheaper in larger quantities so I buy the big bag and freeze most of them. They're still viable 3 - 5 years later. I love broccoli sprouts, but I want to try some new varieties.

I use a Bioset sprouter. I put the trays in the dishwasher. Water twice a day, the water drips from one tray to the next, very easy.

ever try mustard seed sprouts? I wonder just how hot/spicy they are..

I would LOVE to grow sprouts! Do they need a sunny location, cause I don't have one :surrender:

no, they don't need full sun. My bioset sits on my kitchen counter, 5-6 feet from a window. My house is a little on the cold side in the winter, so my broccoli sprouts grow slower, but they still sprout (10 - 14 days to maturity right now). I usually have 2 or 3 sets going at a time so that I always have some to eat -- oldest sprouts in the top tray so they can grow tall, then progressively younger sprouts in lower trays and I rotate them as needed.

I recently had an incident where I forgot to water them for a bit. Too much going on, I was never home, and the sprouts were the casualty. My crops went sour so I threw them out. But I just started a new batch.

Try it -- if it wasn't easy, I wouldn't do it

Thanks for the info! Sounds like a birthday present idea to me :bliss:

If they're gonna get ANY sun at all, I'd have to put them in the living room..... big oak trees in back, so the kitchen gets some sun in winter, but not much at all when the trees leaf out. I would like to give a go though.

No, you grow them without direct sun. Perfect on a dark kitchen counter; some folk do it inside a cabinet but I find better air flow not locked up. You can even grow them inside an empty clean mayo jar with just some cheesecloth [or leftover window screening] and a rubber band.

Put the right amount of seed in the jar, fill with room temp tap water, then soak 8-12 hours. I've even forgotten & let them go 24 hrs with no bad effect.

Then drain, and rinse again with room temp water.

You want it to drain completely, so leave them tipped downward at an angle in a bowl [making sure the inside of the jar gets plenty of air] or shake out as much water as possible.

Then rinse again every 6 to 10 hours.

The water should be room temp or tepid since hot water can kill the seed & ice cold water slows down the growing process.

If you put too many seeds in, you can always split them into 2 or more jars when it becomes too crowded inside the jars.

I bought & tried the Bioset years ago, found it didn't produce enough sprouts for my use. [I am a sproutaholic ] Plus the tiny seeds tended to clog up the drain. A mayo or canning jar is just much easier.

If you decide to use canning jars, get the wide mouth. They are much easier to wash & get the sprouts out of when they are ready to harvest.

I'm not a fan of hulls, so I do a float & remove at about day 5.

I find well drained finished spouts keep fine in a zip lock bag in the fridge, or a cheaper baggies with a twistie. I usually poke a few tiny air holes with a fork to not suffocate them.

try it cookiemom! Do you buy a lot of sprouts in the store? I'm not a great fan of alfalfa sprouts, but I love broccoli sprouts. I used to buy them a lot, but they're expensive and didn't always look fresh in the store, so I looked into growing my own -- it's much more economical than buying grown sprouts. I believe sprouts are really good for us, too.

I think I'm going to try this from the amazon seller ennui was talking about:
http://www.amazon.com/Sprout-House-...r_1_3?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1326824293&sr=1-3

that way I can try a bunch of new varieties and see which ones I want to get in larger quantities. I wanted to try clover, radish, fenugreek, mustard.. and they're all in there, plus more :bliss:
