Tipping....is it optional?

Greek restaurants & lunch...can I just say cups of soup and the roll warmer? UGH...I DO NOT MISS THOSE DAYS!! I also don't miss the one I worked in where we wore hot pink "polo" shirts with the logo on it in black and black spandex biker shorts. With an apron on you looked naked from the waist down from the front!

Anyway, the tipping custom is in place to shift a good portion of the cost of the meal and service experience onto the customer, and even worse, onto the wait staff. There were times I paid much more than $600 a year (PS even though it was all taxable to me) out to my coworkers in tip share, I wonder if servers have to issue 1099s now to busboys and bartenders?

My point is without tipping, the restaurant will charge so much, you will not be able to afford to eat there.

Letting the boss decide the price (based on his overhead and the profit he wants) is always gonna cost more than "10 percent is recommended."

I made well over $30 an hour when I waitressed (some of that time at Pizza Hut). No restaurant owner is going to pay qualified wait staff $30 an hour.

So, change the pay scale, change the level of service.

And the $30 an hour is why I say waitresses need to stop whining about getting paid less than minimum wage. I look at that job the same as being a teacher or a social worker, you know what you are going to get before you get into it, choose wisely.

And are you going to actually answer my question since I answered yours. :flowers:

Question for those who say we should tip heavily because of all the background stuff, the IRS, splitting the tip and the low pay...if all that was fixed: Pay is now regular minimum wage or more for everyone and there is someone hired (also at min wage or more) to do the background work, and anything else that is "unfair". Do you still feel tipping should be handled the same way and what would be your reasons then? Just curious?

I'm not sure what you mean by "the same way", but if all things were equal (i.e. the IRS thing not splitting with others etc.) then I would tip my basic 20 o/o, more for exemplary service. The way it is "supposed" to work. I'd feel better knowing that money was going into the pocket of the person who "earned" it.

To answer OPs question,

for us, tipping in restaurants in not optional. The least we give for so-so service is 15 percent before tax and if the server went beyond our expectations, we give 25 percent of pre tax bill.

if we can't afford the 15 percent tip, we'd rather not eat out. we know servers don't make much in our area so we give tips.

By the same way I meant would you still tip the same amount and think it was necessary to do so and what would be your reasoning...because it seemed that many were saying the reason you MUST tip is because they get less pay, have to report it to the IRS regardless, have to do all this extra work, etc.

I dont tip because of those reasons and never will, I dont care about that and think that is a bigger issue that should be solved outside of my direct payment to that waitress, I actually tip for the service, so I was asking if those were your main reason for tipping, would you still tip the same and say it is a must if those things were evened out?

Of course I get what Kathy is saying about the amount they really make, and that is why I am saying the crying over not making enough is not real if you are then saying I wont even accept minimum wage because I have to make a minimum of $30 an hour.

Oh and I have been a waitress both banquet and restaurant, and I know the pay was nice, but I was also a student and wasn't in a high tax range.

And as an aside, I did my sociology final project on sexual deviance and worked as a waitress at a strip club...never had to take off a thing, but did wear short skirts (but it was the 90's when the school girl shirt skirts with the knee high socks were in, so the skirts were short) and I got WAYYYYYY more in tips and made WAAAAAAAY more than those strippers who were naked and being felt up all the time. I loved that job, dont think I have ever made that much money to this day...work 3 hours on a Friday night and leave out with $300+ in cash, plus the $2.XX I got paid an hour. But I got followed home one day and had to quit after that.

10 percent only at full service restaurants, 15 percent if the service is amazing.

I think that's what pisses me off here the tipping is 20-25 percent.

Thanks. there wasn't a button for 10%... it was 15%, 20% or do your own, which made me think it was like here. I guess I was wrong :dunce:

About 20 years ago, I dated a waitress/bartender from a local :quotes:adult entertainment:quotes: establishment.

I remember the waitresses talking to eachother about tips. As in, "it's a good thing you went home yesterday. It was so dead. I only made $300."
"Oh, that sucks! Yeah I'm glad I left." I'm sitting there thinking, WTF? you work 6 hours.

There was also a dancer that mentioned that she :quotes:claimed:quotes: $82,000 on her taxes. (She worked 4 days a week, during the day).

Well I have been down here for getting close to 10 years. Guess the American influence is going strong in Canada.

I had a friend who was a dancer at an :quotes:adult entertainment:quotes: establishment. She always came home and put her tips in a container, and on Sunday morning she would sit on her living room floor in her jammies and stack all her hundred dollar bills into piles of $1,000. She had stacks all over the floor and she'd shake her head sometimes and say "**** what a crappy week" while she was literally surrounded by these stacks

I was like really??? Was kind of hard to feel bad that she had such a :quotes:tough:quotes: week.

I usually tip 15 percent. I would do 20 if the service was really good, but we very, very rarely eat at a restaurant where we are served. At first I couldn't remember off hand the last time - but I think I remember now - it was Olive Garden sometime around the holidays. I tipped the waiter 15 percent even though the service was lousy and I found him rude. When I got out to the van I realized I didn't have my credit card. I went right back in and it wasn't in the little book on the table. I saw the waiter coming and I asked him about it and he played dumb, walked away for half a second and then came right back with it. I strongly believe he had it and was going to be using it later. I went straight home and cancelled it. So much wish I hadn't left him any tip. I have another story too where the waitress ripped me off on a TGIF GC. We were vacationing in FL and eating with family. Service was also horrible and I'm sure the waitress knew she had made me dad really mad. They had no cream for the coffee and instead she brought him milk in a little bowl and he said, "Do you think I'm a cat or something?" Anyway, when we paid with our GC she took a long time to come back. Come to find out when we went to use the GC again a number of months later that she had made 2 charges off our GC and given us the receipt from the first one so we wouldn't know. I assume she helped herself to the generous amount off the second charge. Don't remember what kind of tip I left her, but whatever it was it was way too much.

I tip well at those place too. ;) BUT if it's a woman then I hand her the money. What? I appreciate some nice entertainment. :9:

Im friends with the manager at dominos and she told me the drivers do not get a penny of that $2.50 fee that goes to the store

Yes and no. It may vary by store but a friend owns a Dominoes in NWIN and though the fee does not go to the driver, they do get a certain dollar amount above their wage for each delivery.

But of course you have to tip some on top of the delivery fee. Though I think on a $10 pizza $2-3 would be fair after all they are often driving less than a mile around here from delivery to delivery.

Why do you tip your hair stylist? manicurist? pedicurist? They make minimum wage or better and most everyone tips them without even thinking about it.

Why do you tip your dog groomer? Your dog can not complain so whats the difference if they like their do (or don't)?

Ever tip the florist? If yes, why? They are making an hourly wage.

Ever leave a tip for the maid in the hotel? Why? She makes minimum+ hourly wage.

Do ya tip the massage therapist? You KNOW they make well over minimum wage and yet, most tip for getting a massage.

Plenty of people we tip who make a guaranteed hourly wage, good day or bad they are guaranteed to make an hourly wage. Why is it so hard to think a server isn't worth the same or better.

And that's all I have to say about that.....

I think if a waitress kills it and earn $30 an hour thats awsome why should she just putter around when she could kick some ****

Around here there is a delivery fee... So I am paying specifically for this service, it's not something nice they are doing for me so I don't feel the need to pay above and beyond the fee.

Pizza delivery guys do often get the delivery fee you're charged. But like servers, make less than min wage. They also pay for their own gas. So most of the time those fees barely cover their gas for the night. Tips are where they make their money.

I will tip a server, I will not tip a deli person, a dunkin donuts coffee maker (unless they see a screw up and fix it before I get it. Like last week when the woman asked how many splendas and I said 2 and she thought I said 10 and fixed it, I tipped because I would have been furious when I drove away with that many in it), no tip for someone handing over my order, someone with a jar to ring up my soda etc etc etc.

Tips are way out of line and they can suck it.

Who the hell takes 10 anyway?!!!

OHHH!!!!

Reminds me of the time when I went to a casino and actually hit on a slot machine. I think like $400 or something and said that the person has to pay it and not the slot machine. So I wait and they congratulate me and give me 3 one hundred dollar bills, a 50, 2 twenties and 2 fives. I thanked them and left. Little did I know they expected a tip from me. Me and my brother always talked about this. Me? No tip for that. Him? He said toss them $5-$10. My reasoning is absolutely not. They aren't there when I lost $ and hooking me up with $ to gamble with, right?

But I do always give the coffee/drink lady $1 for soda or coffee at the casino.
