Yes, when you start out seriously training, and training right, you'll make crazy gains the first year.

A beginner has the biggest potential for growth. It is important to take advantage of this environment by understanding the basics of weight training and building muscle. Many beginners waste the opportunity by going to the gym with no plan or understanding.
 
This is true, I wish I'd have sorted out my diet and cashed in on these potential "easy gains" when I first started lifting.

Exactly, the potential is often wasted on beginners. I wasted the opportunity myself, I didn't do enough research, to gain a basic understanding before commencing. If I trained like I do now when I first started, my gains would have been much bigger.
