    I heart Nick Malgieri

I have a few of his books and just pulled them off the shelf the other day to pick out Christmas recipes! Malgieri's How to Bake was the first baking book I bought myself and I still use it all the time. I've never had one of his recipes fail. He has a hazelnut biscotti recipe that is...

Tis the season to drink homemade Bailey's!

That sounds great! How long does it keep in the fridge? Does it separate? You've reminded me that I wanted to try homemade Kahlua this year...gotta dig up that recipe. I'm starting to sample all the flavored vodka I made this summer....so far, spiced cherry is my favorite.

    Sad anniversary for me

This morning, my 9 year old asked me what today's date was, and someone else in the room said it was the 8th. Crap, I thought....a million things to do, it's freezing cold, I don't want to add Mass to my to-do list. I felt better when I realized that it was actually the 7th and I could plan...

Sophie is not a happy camper right now

Can she wear one of the soft collars? I know they make them...but I'm not sure if it would allow her to still get at her tail. Perhaps if you got one a size larger than she really needs. Here's an example...

Recommend some good restaurants in the west and far west suburbs of Chicago

Check out www.lthforum.com. It's a very diverse group of Chicago area foodies. Can be snarky at times (shouldn't scare anyone from here!!), but it's a fantastic resource for Chicago area dining on both the high end and at holes-in-the-wall.

So how does this holiday thing really work?

Our standby dessert for family gatherings around the holidays is well soaked rum balls. No one else likes them, which is just fine by my husband and me!:giggles:

How do you doll up your brownies?

I've made them before with the mini peppermint patties. I think your idea would work just fine. Or maybe you could put choc frosting on them and crushed candy canes. Could look pretty.

Worried about Hobo the cat :(

A few years ago, I had a cat with some health issues. He was losing weight and turning his nose up at most foods. I picked up a few varieties of Wellness brand at the vet's office and he LOVED it. I think you can get it at Petco now, too. I also used to hand feed him salmon that I'd get in...

    Need Winter dinner ideas

I usually throw in an onion or two, garlic and some carrots. Celery if I have it on hand. Sometimes water, sometimes chicken stock. Believe it or not, some nutmeg tastes nice, too.

    Need Winter dinner ideas

Good old split pea soup is one of our favorites, even all my kids. Honestly, you can follow the directions on the bag and throw it in the slow cooker. As long as you have a ham bone in there, it's almost foolproof and it smells so very good when it's cold outside.

    Disney on a dime

We are DVC (Disney Vacation Club) members. I'd never try to convince anyone that Disney is cheap, but I will say that, for our family, we save a lot of money by staying at the deluxe resorts. They all have kitchens. So, we go to costco or Publix, get a bunch of food, and cook a lot of our...

    Disney on a dime

http://www.disboards.com/ Check out that site. Seriously, I bet any question you could dream of would be answered there. It's filled with people who REALLY like Disney. I know many people say to stay off site if you're trying to save money, but one of the best tips I can offer is to stay...

Y'all ever have vertigo or panic attacks?

mrsmom, he just did a quick exam that day. And then he sent me for bloodwork to be done when I had the time. Prior to that, I think it had been probably 2 years since I'd seen him. I was very nervous to go...felt like I was going to get a 'crazy' or 'hypochondriac' stamp in my chart (kind of...

Y'all ever have vertigo or panic attacks?

Exactly. For me, it almost feels like an out of body experience. Like I'm just floating and watching myself, if that makes any sense. It's like your whole body goes numb, and the room seems to spin. I had them very regularly last year when I knew I was nearing the time to put my dog to...

    Gardening people...

The spray is a fertilizer, too. I looked for a link, but couldn't find one. Shame if they stopped making it, b/c it really was good. As for fencing to keep deer out....I tell you, the deer are maddening to deal with, and they jump high. They look beautiful, but they can really mess with...

    Gardening people...

A friend helped me make mine from cedar planks (supposedly untreated) I purchased at Home Depot. I think they are 4 or 6 inches deep. We turned over the ground where the beds would be built and just screwed the boards together will really long wood screws. For soil, I went to the local...

    Baked French Toast Casserole

I've done a similar baked french toast recipe for a few years, but the one I have calls for a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread. Smells amazing when it cooks! I usually try to make it Christmas Eve and the night before Thanksgiving....smells great while we open presents, and on Thanksgiving it...

Apple Pie Jam recipe for you to try...

You can process them in a regular pot, so long as it has a tight fitting cover. Some people put a dishtowel in the bottom of the pot b/c they say it helps with thermal shock and keeps the jars from banging together and breaking. I don't, though, and have never had any problems. You need to...

    Being under pressure sucks

I don't post often, so I apologize for butting in here. Being the child of 2 people who married largely b/c they conceived me, I saw firsthand how utterly terrible a bad marriage can be and suffered for it as a child. Two people who do not truly belong together do nothing more than amplify...
